Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Magaldrate, sold as Riopan, is an antacid you take to soothe heartburn and an upset, acidy stomach. It works right where it lands, neutralizing acid in your stomach. The concern here is that guar gum forms a thick gel that can coat things and physically get in the way of that contact.

If you swallow both at the same time, the guar gum gel may trap some of the antacid or slow how well it spreads, so you might get less relief than you expect. The good news is this is a timing problem, not a dangerous one. A simple fix is to space them out: take your Magaldrate first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the guar gum. If you use both regularly, run the timing past your pharmacist.
