Here's the thing with guar gum and your methimazole (Tapazole): this fiber forms a thick gel in your stomach that can grab onto pills and slow or lessen how much of them your body soaks up. For methimazole, which you take to calm an overactive thyroid, less absorption could mean it works a little less well, and your thyroid symptoms (racing heart, jitters, weight loss, feeling too warm) might not be controlled as smoothly.

This isn't a dangerous reaction, just a timing issue. The simple fix is spacing them out. Take your methimazole first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Food amounts of guar are unlikely to matter much. Concentrated fiber supplements are where to be careful, so please run your routine by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Methimazole Used For?

Brand name: Tapazole

Methimazole tablets are used in adults and children with hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) due to Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter when surgery or radioactive iodine is not the right option. They work to lower thyroid hormone levels and ease symptoms.

Methimazole tablets are also used to bring thyroid hormone levels down before a patient undergoes thyroidectomy (thyroid surgery) or radioactive iodine treatment, making those procedures safer.
