Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you swallow it around the same time as your tamoxifen, that gel can grab onto the pill and slow or reduce how much your body actually absorbs. With a once-daily medicine you're relying on to lower your breast cancer risk, you don't want anything quietly trimming the dose you take in. The concern here is getting less tamoxifen on board, not more.

This is based on modest evidence (it's been shown with drugs like metformin and penicillin), so it's a reasonable precaution rather than a sure thing. The easy fix is timing: take your tamoxifen first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum, and always take the fiber with plenty of water. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Tamoxifen Used For?

Brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox

Tamoxifen is used to treat metastatic breast cancer (breast cancer that has spread) in both women and men, and as adjuvant (after-surgery) therapy for early-stage breast cancer in women. It also reduces the occurrence of cancer in the opposite breast when used as adjuvant therapy.

In women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) — a very early, non-invasive form of breast cancer — tamoxifen is used after breast surgery and radiation to reduce the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. It is also approved to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in women who are at high risk but have not yet been diagnosed. Soltamox (oral solution) is specifically indicated for all of these uses in adult patients.
