Guar Gum and Valacyclovir

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Valacyclovir

Valacyclovir falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Guar Gum interacts with.

Guar gum might reduce the absorption of some oral drugs, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical side of taking guar gum with valacyclovir (Valtrex). Guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and that gel can act like a sponge in your gut, slowing or reducing how much of an oral medication actually gets absorbed. We've seen this with drugs like metformin and penicillin. The concern with valacyclovir is the same idea: less drug reaching your bloodstream could mean it works less well at calming a shingles or genital herpes outbreak.

Since valacyclovir works best when you keep good levels in your body, an easy fix is timing. Take your valacyclovir first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Food-amounts of fiber usually aren't the worry, concentrated supplements are. Run your schedule by your pharmacist to be safe.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Valacyclovir page

“Valacyclovir (Valtrex) works against herpes outbreaks only if enough of it gets absorbed into your blood, and most of this list threatens exactly that. Of the 27 supplements on file, 17 can change how well oral medicines like this one are absorbed, and the single major-rated entry, activated charcoal, binds drugs in the gut outright.”

About Guar Gum

What is Guar Gum?

Guar Gum
  • Constipation and bowel regularity
  • Diarrhea (as a stool bulking agent)
  • Lowering cholesterol
  • Blood sugar control
  • Feeling full for weight management

Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Valacyclovir

What Is Valacyclovir Used For?

Brand name: Valtrex

Valacyclovir tablets are used in adults to treat cold sores (herpes labialis), genital herpes (initial and recurrent episodes), and shingles (herpes zoster). They can also be taken daily as suppressive therapy to reduce how often genital herpes outbreaks occur, and to lower the risk of passing genital herpes to a partner.

In children and adolescents, valacyclovir tablets are used to treat cold sores in those aged 12 and older, and chickenpox in those aged 2 to under 18. Valacyclovir has not been established as safe and effective for most uses in immunocompromised patients, with the exception of suppressive therapy for genital herpes in HIV-infected adults.
