Gum arabic has been used as a suspending osmotic agent in drug formulations. It might improve bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs like naproxen, but reduce absorption of polar drugs like amoxicillin. To avoid changes in absorption, take gum arabic 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thing to know about gum arabic and your Rubraca (rucaparib): gum arabic is basically a soluble fiber, and fiber sitting in your gut at the same time as a pill can sometimes grab onto the medicine and change how much gets absorbed. This concern is mostly theoretical and based on lower-quality evidence, so it isn't a reason to panic.

Still, rucaparib is a serious cancer therapy where steady, predictable levels matter, so I wouldn't want fiber nudging its absorption up or down. The simple fix is timing: take your rucaparib first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before having the gum arabic. To be safe, please run this past your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any fiber supplement.

About Rucaparib

What Is Rucaparib Used For?

Brand name: Rubraca

Rubraca (rucaparib) is used for two types of cancer in adults who carry a harmful BRCA gene mutation (either inherited or found in the tumor). First, it is used as maintenance treatment — meaning ongoing treatment to keep cancer from coming back — in people with recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer who responded (fully or partially) to platinum-based chemotherapy.

Second, Rubraca treats metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (advanced prostate cancer that has stopped responding to hormone-lowering treatment) in adults who have already received androgen receptor-directed therapy. Patients must be tested with an FDA-approved companion diagnostic to confirm the BRCA mutation before starting Rubraca for prostate cancer.
