Hu Zhang + Cyclosporine
Cyclosporine brand names: Neoral, Gengraf, Sandimmune, Ciclosporine, Cequa, and others.
Hu Zhang has a moderate interaction with Cyclosporine. Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Cyclosporine
Cyclosporine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hu Zhang interacts with.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with pairing Hu Zhang and cyclosporine. Cyclosporine is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in lab studies appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, cyclosporine could build up to higher levels than your doctor intended.
Cyclosporine is a narrow-window drug, so even small shifts can matter. Too much can stress your kidneys, raise blood pressure, cause tremor or headache, or bump up potassium. The good news is the evidence here is theoretical, and one human study using a big resveratrol dose didn't force any medication changes. Still, because of how closely cyclosporine is monitored, please check with your transplant team or pharmacist before adding it.

About Hu Zhang
What is Hu Zhang?
- Source of resveratrol
- Heart and circulation support
- Inflammation
- Liver and digestive complaints (traditional)
- Cough and respiratory symptoms (traditional)
- Skin and joint conditions (traditional topical use)
Hu Zhang (Japanese knotweed root) is a traditional Chinese herb that is one of the richest natural sources of resveratrol and emodin. Some lab and early human research looks interesting for inflammation and heart health, but high-quality evidence in people is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Cyclosporine
What Is Cyclosporine Used For?
Brand names: Neoral, Gengraf, Sandimmune, Ciclosporine, Cequa, Verkazia, Vevye
Oral cyclosporine (such as Gengraf, Neoral and the modified generic capsules and solution) is used to prevent organ rejection in kidney, liver and heart transplants. It is also used for severe active rheumatoid arthritis that has not responded well enough to methotrexate. It is also used for severe, hard-to-treat plaque psoriasis in adults with normal immune systems.
Sandimmune capsules and injection, used with corticosteroids, prevent organ rejection and treat chronic rejection in people previously treated with other immune-suppressing medicines. Eye products have different uses. Restasis, Restasis MultiDose and generic cyclosporine eye emulsion increase tear production in dry eye linked to eye inflammation. Cequa increases tear production in keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye). Vevye treats signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. Verkazia treats vernal keratoconjunctivitis in children and adults.

Cyclosporine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Cyclosporine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Hu Zhang — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
