Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.

Here's the gist with Hu Zhang and your verapamil. This herb is loaded with resveratrol, and in test-tube studies resveratrol can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, one of the pathways that helps break verapamil down. If that pathway gets blocked, verapamil could build up a bit in your system, which might nudge its effects stronger than expected. With a heart and blood pressure medicine like this, that could show up as dizziness, unusual tiredness, constipation, swelling in the ankles, a slower heartbeat, or blood pressure that runs low.

Now, the honest part: this is theoretical. It's based on lab work, not on real cases in people, so it may never amount to anything noticeable. Still, since verapamil affects your heart rhythm, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before adding concentrated Hu Zhang supplements, especially so they can keep an eye on how you feel.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here's the short version: your body clears verapamil using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. One of the compounds in Hu Zhang (resveratrol) has shown in test-tube studies that it might slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, verapamil could build up a bit and hit harder than expected. With verapamil that can mean things like a slower heart rate, feeling lightheaded or dizzy, low blood pressure, swollen ankles, or constipation.

The reassuring part is that this is theoretical. It's based mostly on lab work, and one human study using a big dose of resveratrol didn't require any medication changes. Still, since verapamil affects your heart rhythm, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

About Verapamil

What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
