Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version with Consensi (a combo pill of amlodipine for blood pressure and celecoxib for pain and inflammation): karaya gum is a bulk-forming fiber. When it swells into a gel in your gut, it can physically trap part of a swallowed pill and slow or reduce how much you actually absorb. With amlodipine that could mean a bit less blood pressure control, and with celecoxib slightly less pain relief.

The good news is this is theoretical, based on how fiber behaves rather than real reports of problems, and it's rated minor. A simple fix covers it: take your Consensi first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. If you have questions, your pharmacist can help you space things out.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amlodipine, Celecoxib page

“Grapefruit is the risk I would want a Consensi patient to grasp first. Consensi pairs amlodipine and celecoxib to treat high blood pressure and arthritis pain, and grapefruit blocks the enzyme that clears amlodipine, raising its levels.”

About Karaya Gum

What is Karaya Gum?

Karaya Gum
  • Constipation (bulk-forming laxative)
  • Appetite and weight management (bulking agent)
  • Dental adhesive/denture fixative
  • Skin barrier for ostomy appliances
  • Food thickening and stabilizing

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.
