Here's some good news that may set your mind at ease. The concern listed in our database is about bulk-forming fibers like karaya gum possibly grabbing onto oral medications in your gut and changing how much gets absorbed. But filgrastim (Neupogen) is given as an injection, either under the skin or into a vein, so it never passes through your stomach or intestines. That means the fiber from karaya gum simply doesn't get the chance to interfere with it.

This particular warning is theoretical and aimed at pills and capsules you swallow, not injectables. So with filgrastim, I wouldn't expect a meaningful problem. If you take any other oral medicines, separate them from karaya gum by about 30 to 60 minutes, and check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

About Filgrastim Injection

What Is Filgrastim Injection Used For?

Brand name: Neupogen

Filgrastim injection (available as Neupogen, Nivestym, and Releuko) is used to lower the risk of serious infection in people whose white blood cell counts drop dangerously low. This can happen during chemotherapy for cancer, during treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), or after bone marrow transplantation. It is also used to help move stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream so they can be collected for transplantation.

In addition, filgrastim is used long-term to reduce infections in people with severe chronic neutropenia — including congenital neutropenia, cyclic neutropenia, and idiopathic neutropenia. Neupogen is also indicated to increase survival in patients acutely exposed to radiation doses that suppress the bone marrow (Hematopoietic Syndrome of Acute Radiation Syndrome).
