Here's the simple version: karaya gum is a fiber-based bulk laxative, and like other fiber products, it can grab onto pills in your stomach as it swells into a gel. With Metaxalone (Skelaxin), the concern is that some of the medicine could get trapped in that gel and not absorb as well, which might leave you with weaker muscle-relaxing and pain relief than you expect.

To be fair, this is a theoretical worry based on how fiber behaves, not strong proof, and it's rated minor. Metaxalone isn't a prodrug, so we're really just talking about absorption. An easy fix is timing: take your Metaxalone first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

What Is Metaxalone Used For?

Metaxalone tablets are used to help relieve discomfort caused by acute (short-term), painful musculoskeletal conditions — things like muscle strains, sprains, and similar injuries. It is meant to be used together with rest, physical therapy, and other treatments, not as a stand-alone fix.

This use applies to adults and adolescents 13 years of age and older. Metaxalone tablets are available as the branded product Skelaxin and as a generic.
