Here's the thing to know about pairing karaya gum with your quetiapine (Seroquel): this is a physical, in-the-gut issue, not a liver enzyme one. Karaya gum is a bulky fiber that swells into a gel when it hits water, and that gel can grab onto a pill sitting nearby and slow or shrink how much medicine your body soaks up. With quetiapine, less absorption could mean a weaker effect on your mood or symptoms, and more absorption (which is also possible) could mean more drowsiness or dizziness.

That said, this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, and it's rated as minor. An easy fix is to space them out: take your quetiapine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you set up the timing.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

About Quetiapine

What Is Quetiapine Used For?

Brand names: Seroquel, Dopaquel

Quetiapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (including manic or mixed episodes and depressive episodes) in adults and, for some uses, in children and adolescents as young as 10. It can be used alone or alongside other mood stabilizers such as lithium or divalproex.

The extended-release form (including Seroquel XR and generic extended-release products) is also approved as add-on therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who are already taking an antidepressant. The regular tablet form (including Seroquel and generic tablets) is not approved for MDD.
