Here's the gist with Xifaxan (rifaximin) and karaya gum. Karaya is a bulk fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. Any time you add a gel-forming fiber alongside a pill, there's a chance it can grab onto the medicine and change how much gets absorbed. With rifaximin this is mostly theoretical, based on how fiber behaves rather than real cases, and it's rated minor.

One nice thing about rifaximin is that it stays mostly in the gut on purpose, since that's where it fights the bacteria causing your traveler's diarrhea, IBS, or hepatic encephalopathy. So fiber isn't likely to cause a big problem. Still, to be safe, separate them: take your rifaximin first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

About Rifaximin

What Is Rifaximin Used For?

Brand name: Xifaxan

Xifaxan (rifaximin) tablets treat three distinct conditions. For travelers' diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli, it is approved for adults and children 12 and older. For irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), it is approved for adults. It is also used in adults to reduce the chance that hepatic encephalopathy (confusion and other brain symptoms caused by liver disease) will come back.

Important limits apply: Xifaxan should not be used for travelers' diarrhea that comes with fever, blood in the stool, or when a pathogen other than E. coli is suspected. It is also not suitable for bacterial infections outside the gut, because very little of the drug is absorbed into the bloodstream.
