Here's the gist with sulfasalazine and karaya gum: this bulky fiber gel can grab onto pills sitting in your gut and slow or reduce how much medicine actually gets absorbed. With sulfasalazine, that could mean a bit less reaches your system, which might soften how well it controls your ulcerative colitis or rheumatoid arthritis over time. The flip side is also possible, so the safest move is simply spacing them out.

Honestly, this is a minor, theory-based concern, not something proven to cause big problems. To be safe, take your sulfasalazine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum, and drink plenty of water. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

What Is Sulfasalazine Used For?

Brand names: SAS, Azulfidine EN-Tabs, Azulfidine

Sulfasalazine tablets and delayed-release tablets are both used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, as add-on therapy in severe ulcerative colitis, and to help keep ulcerative colitis in remission between flares.

The delayed-release form — sold as Azulfidine EN-tabs and Sulfasalazine Delayed Release Tablets — is also approved for adults with rheumatoid arthritis who have not responded well enough to NSAIDs or salicylates, and for children with polyarticular-course juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who have had a similar inadequate response.
