Here's the gist with vismodegib (Erivedge) and karaya gum. Karaya gum is a bulk-forming fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. That gel can sometimes grab onto a pill you swallow around the same time and change how much medicine actually gets absorbed. With vismodegib, this is a theoretical concern based on how fibers behave, not something proven to cause real problems, and it's rated as minor.

The worry would be slightly less vismodegib getting into your system, which could mean a bit less benefit against your skin cancer. Since this is an important cancer medicine, a simple fix helps: take your vismodegib first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum. It's always worth running your full routine by your pharmacist or oncology team.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

Erivedge (vismodegib) is used to treat adults with basal cell carcinoma — the most common type of skin cancer — in two specific situations: when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic basal cell carcinoma), or when it is locally advanced and has returned after surgery, or when surgery and radiation are not options.

It is not approved for use in children.
