Kinetin and Acetylsalicylic acid

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Acetylsalicylic acid

Acetylsalicylic acid falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Kinetin interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that kinetin inhibits human platelet aggregation and activation. Also, evidence from animal research suggests that kinetin prolongs bleeding time. Theoretically, kinetin might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: aspirin already thins your blood by stopping platelets from clumping together, which is exactly why it helps prevent clots. The concern with kinetin is that lab and animal studies hint it may do something similar, slowing platelets and lengthening the time it takes to stop bleeding. Stack the two and, in theory, you could see a bit more bleeding risk, things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. There are no human studies showing a real problem, and most people use kinetin as a skin cream, not a pill, so very little gets into your body. Still, if you take aspirin daily, mention any kinetin product to your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Acetylsalicylic acid page

“Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin, sold as Entrophen) thins the blood by design, which is exactly why this page earns real vigilance rather than a quick skim. Of the 242 supplement and herbal ingredients on file, more than 200 can add to that blood-thinning effect and raise the chance of bruising or bleeding, especially in the stomach.”

About Kinetin

What is Kinetin?

  • Anti-aging skincare
  • Skin smoothing and texture
  • Reducing skin dryness and roughness
  • Evening skin tone
  • Cosmetic moisturizing

Kinetin is a plant growth hormone (a cytokinin) used mainly in topical anti-aging and skincare products, not as an oral dietary supplement. Early laboratory research and small studies suggest it may help skin texture and hydration, but high-quality human evidence is limited. If you want to try it, use it as a cosmetic skin product and check with a pharmacist or dermatologist, especially if you have sensitive skin.
