Korean Pine and Minoxidil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Minoxidil

Minoxidil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Korean Pine interacts with.

Animal research shows that Korean pine nut oil reduces blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats. Theoretically, Korean pine may increase the risk of hypotension when used in combination with drugs that lower blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: minoxidil is a vasodilator, meaning it relaxes your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure down. The thinking behind this interaction is that Korean pine (specifically pine nut oil) might nudge blood pressure a little lower too. Stack the two together and, in theory, your pressure could drop more than expected.

If that happened, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy when standing up, tired, or get a faster heartbeat, all things minoxidil can already cause. That said, this caution comes only from animal research, so it's very much a 'just in case' note, not a proven problem. Eating pine nuts as food is unlikely to matter. If you're considering concentrated pine extracts, run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Minoxidil page

“American hellebore heads the concerns for anyone taking minoxidil (Loniten, Rogaine), because even small amounts of its alkaloids lower blood pressure on their own, a dangerous match with one of the most potent pressure-lowering drugs prescribed. It is one of four major-rated entries among the 139 supplements and herbs on record, and t…”

About Korean Pine

What is Korean Pine?

  • Appetite control and weight management
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • General nutrition and energy
  • Skin and antioxidant support
  • Cough and respiratory comfort (traditional)

Korean Pine is best known as the source of edible pine nuts and pine nut oil, which are nutritious foods rich in healthy fats. While some early research looks at pine nut oil for appetite and cholesterol, strong human evidence for any specific health benefit is limited. Treat it mainly as a food, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts.
