Korean Pine and Nifedipine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Nifedipine

Nifedipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Korean Pine interacts with.

Animal research shows that Korean pine nut oil reduces blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats. Theoretically, Korean pine may increase the risk of hypotension when used in combination with drugs that lower blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Nifedipine already does the heavy lifting of relaxing your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure and chest pain under control. Korean pine, mostly known as the source of pine nuts and pine nut oil, has shown a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect in animal studies. The thinking is that stacking the two could, in theory, push your blood pressure a little lower than expected.

If that happened, you might notice things like dizziness, lightheadedness when standing up, a faster heartbeat, or feeling washed out. Honestly though, this is a theoretical concern based on rat data, not strong human proof. Eating pine nuts as a food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated pine extracts are the bigger question mark, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using those.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

About Korean Pine

What is Korean Pine?

  • Appetite control and weight management
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • General nutrition and energy
  • Skin and antioxidant support
  • Cough and respiratory comfort (traditional)

Korean Pine is best known as the source of edible pine nuts and pine nut oil, which are nutritious foods rich in healthy fats. While some early research looks at pine nut oil for appetite and cholesterol, strong human evidence for any specific health benefit is limited. Treat it mainly as a food, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts.
