Korean Pine and Enalapril Maleate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Enalapril Maleate

Enalapril Maleate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Korean Pine interacts with.

Animal research shows that Korean pine nut oil reduces blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats. Theoretically, Korean pine may increase the risk of hypotension when used in combination with drugs that lower blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: enalapril already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. The concern with Korean Pine is that, at least in animal studies, pine nut oil also nudged blood pressure down a bit. Put the two together and, in theory, your pressure could drift lower than intended.

The good news is this is mostly theoretical, based on lab and animal data, not strong human studies. Eating pine nuts as food is very unlikely to cause any problem. With concentrated pine extracts or oils, just keep an eye out for dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, unusual tiredness, or a fast heartbeat, which can signal low blood pressure. If you notice those or plan to use a concentrated supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Enalapril Maleate page

“Potassium is the supplement I worry about first with enalapril maleate (Vasotec, Epaned). This ACE inhibitor, used for high blood pressure and heart failure, already makes the body hold onto potassium, so adding more can raise blood levels too far, a problem called hyperkalemia.”

About Korean Pine

What is Korean Pine?

  • Appetite control and weight management
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • General nutrition and energy
  • Skin and antioxidant support
  • Cough and respiratory comfort (traditional)

Korean Pine is best known as the source of edible pine nuts and pine nut oil, which are nutritious foods rich in healthy fats. While some early research looks at pine nut oil for appetite and cholesterol, strong human evidence for any specific health benefit is limited. Treat it mainly as a food, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts.

What Is Enalapril Used For?

Enalapril treats high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats symptomatic heart failure. Enalapril oral solution (including Epaned) is labeled for high blood pressure in adults and children older than one month.
