Here's the gist for Multaq (dronedarone) and kudzu. This isn't about kudzu changing your drug levels or your heart rhythm. The concern is the liver. Dronedarone already carries a known risk of liver injury, which is why doctors sometimes check liver blood tests while you're on it. Kudzu has its own reports of being hard on the liver, so the worry is that the two together could add up and stress your liver more.

To be fair, this is a theoretical caution based on how each one behaves, not strong proof. Still, since dronedarone liver problems are taken seriously, I'd run kudzu by your pharmacist or doctor first, and mention any nausea, belly pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Kudzu is a fast-growing vine whose root has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine and is now studied mostly for reducing alcohol intake. Early research is promising for cutting back on drinking, but evidence for most other uses is weak. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Dronedarone

What Is Dronedarone Used For?

Brand name: Multaq

Multaq (dronedarone) tablets are used to reduce the risk of being hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) — an irregular, often rapid heart rhythm. It is approved for adults who are currently in normal sinus rhythm but have a history of paroxysmal (comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation.

Multaq is not appropriate for everyone with AF. It must not be used in people with permanent atrial fibrillation or in those with recently worsened heart failure requiring hospitalization — these patients face a doubled risk of death, stroke, and hospitalization if they take it.
