Kudzu and Semaglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Semaglutide

Semaglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Kudzu interacts with.

Theoretically, taking kudzu with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Kudzu might lower blood glucose levels and have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetic agents. The dose of diabetes medications might need to be adjusted.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: kudzu may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own. Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus) already works to bring your blood sugar down, so stacking the two together could, in theory, push your levels a little lower than expected. That could mean more shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded, which are classic signs of low blood sugar.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern comes only from lab and animal studies, not from people taking these two together, so it's considered a theoretical, low-risk interaction. On its own, semaglutide rarely causes hypoglycemia. If you'd like to try kudzu, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your numbers, especially if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Semaglutide page

“Semaglutide (Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy) lowers blood sugar, and so do most of the 256 supplements on this page, which is why I read this list with real vigilance rather than a shrug. Nearly all of the entries either add to its glucose-lowering effect and raise the risk of hypoglycemia, or push sugar the other way and blunt it, as niaci…”
