Laminaria and Methimazole

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTITHYROID DRUGS

Why this applies to Methimazole

Methimazole falls under ANTITHYROID DRUGS — the group Laminaria interacts with.

Due to its iodine content, laminaria might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Some laminaria supplements contain up to 1000 mcg of iodine. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking laminaria could theoretically alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: methimazole works by telling your overactive thyroid to slow down its hormone production. Kelp like Laminaria is loaded with iodine, and iodine is the raw material your thyroid uses to make that hormone. So adding a big, unpredictable dose of iodine can work against what your methimazole is trying to do, making it harder to get your numbers under control.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not something proven in studies. But since some kelp products pack up to 1000 mcg of iodine per dose, I'd play it safe. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding Laminaria, since they may want to watch your thyroid levels.

About Laminaria

What is Laminaria?

  • Source of dietary iodine
  • Thyroid support
  • Cervical dilation (medical procedure)
  • Weight management
  • Digestive and detox supplements
  • General nutrition (vitamins and minerals)

Laminaria is a type of brown seaweed (kelp) that is very rich in iodine and is also used in medical settings as a natural cervical dilator. Because its iodine content can be high and variable, supplements may upset thyroid function, so it should be used cautiously and under professional guidance. Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using kelp products, especially if you have a thyroid condition.

About Methimazole

What Is Methimazole Used For?

Brand name: Tapazole

Methimazole tablets are used in adults and children with hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) due to Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter when surgery or radioactive iodine is not the right option. They work to lower thyroid hormone levels and ease symptoms.

Methimazole tablets are also used to bring thyroid hormone levels down before a patient undergoes thyroidectomy (thyroid surgery) or radioactive iodine treatment, making those procedures safer.
