Laminaria and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

THYROID HORMONE

Why this applies to Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group Laminaria interacts with.

Due to its iodine content, laminaria might alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Some laminaria supplements contain up to 1000 mcg of iodine. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking laminaria could theoretically alter the effects of thyroid hormone.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

I want to be upfront with you here: the interaction on file is really about kelp's iodine affecting thyroid hormone medications, like levothyroxine. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a different kind of medicine entirely. It's a hormone given by injection that works on the ovaries or testes, often to trigger ovulation, support fertility, or treat low testosterone. It isn't broken down by your thyroid and doesn't rely on iodine, so Laminaria's iodine wouldn't change how HCG itself works.

That said, kelp can quietly nudge your thyroid up or down because of its high, variable iodine, and that's worth knowing on its own. The evidence here is anecdotal, so don't panic. Before adding any kelp product, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you have a thyroid history.

About Laminaria

What is Laminaria?

  • Source of dietary iodine
  • Thyroid support
  • Cervical dilation (medical procedure)
  • Weight management
  • Digestive and detox supplements
  • General nutrition (vitamins and minerals)

Laminaria is a type of brown seaweed (kelp) that is very rich in iodine and is also used in medical settings as a natural cervical dilator. Because its iodine content can be high and variable, supplements may upset thyroid function, so it should be used cautiously and under professional guidance. Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using kelp products, especially if you have a thyroid condition.
