Lavender and Fosphenytoin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Fosphenytoin

Fosphenytoin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Lavender interacts with.

Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Fosphenytoin (Cerebyx). This medicine is given to calm down overactive electrical signals in the brain, and one of its expected effects is sedation, things like drowsiness, dizziness, and feeling unsteady. Lavender, especially as a concentrated oral oil, may have its own mild calming effect. The worry is simply that two calming things together could add up and leave you more sleepy or foggy than expected.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on how lavender behaves in lab studies, not real-world reports. Human studies of oral lavender didn't show much sedation. Since fosphenytoin is usually given in a hospital or clinic setting and needs careful dosing, just mention any lavender supplements to your care team so they can keep an eye on you.

About Lavender

What is Lavender?

Lavender
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Sleep problems
  • Relaxation and calming
  • Minor skin conditions
  • Aromatherapy

Lavender is a fragrant herb most popular for promoting relaxation, easing anxiety, and supporting sleep, with some encouraging evidence for a standardized oral lavender oil product for anxiety. While generally well tolerated, the essential oil should never be swallowed unless made for that purpose, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should use caution and talk to a healthcare provider first.

About Fosphenytoin Injection

What Is Fosphenytoin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Cerebyx

Fosphenytoin injection is used to treat generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus (a prolonged, life-threatening seizure emergency) and to prevent or treat seizures that occur during or after brain surgery. It is given by intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injection in a hospital or clinical setting.

It can also be used short-term as a substitute for oral phenytoin when a patient cannot take medicine by mouth. This use is temporary — as soon as oral phenytoin is possible again, it should replace the injection.
