Lavender + Phenytoin
Phenytoin brand names: Dilantin Kapseals, Dilantin, Di-Phen, Dilantin Infatabs, Phenytek, and others.
Lavender has a moderate interaction with Phenytoin. Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Phenytoin
Phenytoin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Lavender interacts with.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the situation with lavender and your phenytoin (Dilantin). This isn't about lavender changing how your body breaks the drug down. It's simpler than that: lavender can have a mild calming, sedative effect on its own, and phenytoin can already cause drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling unsteady. Stacked together, those calming effects could in theory add up and leave you feeling more groggy or wobbly than usual.
I want to be straight with you, though: this concern is theoretical, based on how lavender behaves in lab studies. Human studies using oral lavender products didn't actually report extra sleepiness. So it's unlikely to be a big deal, especially at the small amounts in food or aromatherapy. If you take a concentrated oral lavender supplement, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Phenytoin page
“Phenytoin (Dilantin) is a seizure medicine with a narrow therapeutic index, meaning small changes in its blood level can bring seizures back or tip over into toxicity, so I treat its supplement list with real seriousness. The biggest group, 78 ingredients, piles on sedation, and alcohol, kava, and GHB all rate major for exactly that re…”

About Lavender
What is Lavender?
- Anxiety and stress
- Sleep problems
- Relaxation and calming
- Minor skin conditions
- Aromatherapy
Lavender is a fragrant herb most popular for promoting relaxation, easing anxiety, and supporting sleep, with some encouraging evidence for a standardized oral lavender oil product for anxiety. While generally well tolerated, the essential oil should never be swallowed unless made for that purpose, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should use caution and talk to a healthcare provider first.
About Phenytoin
What Is Phenytoin Used For?
Brand names: Dilantin Kapseals, Dilantin, Di-Phen, Dilantin Infatabs, Phenytek, Dilantin injection
Phenytoin is used to treat and prevent seizures. The specific types covered depend on the formulation. Oral extended-release capsules (including Phenytek), chewable tablets (including Dilantin Infatabs and Phenytoin Infatabs), and oral suspension (including Dilantin-125) are used for tonic-clonic (grand mal) and psychomotor (temporal lobe) seizures; most oral forms also cover prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during or after neurosurgery. Chewable tablets and some capsule formulations also cover complex partial seizures.
Parenteral (injectable) phenytoin sodium is used for generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus (a prolonged, life-threatening seizure emergency) and for prevention and treatment of seizures during neurosurgery. The IV form can also substitute short-term for oral phenytoin when a patient cannot take it by mouth.
