Ovulen is a birth control pill that combines two hormones, ethynodiol diacetate and mestranol. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break these hormones down. In lab and animal studies, lemongrass (and its lemony compound citral) seems to slow that enzyme. In theory, that could let the hormone levels in your blood run a little higher than usual.

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It comes only from test tube and animal research, not from real patients, so we don't truly know if it matters in people. If anything, higher hormone levels might mean more familiar pill side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, or spotting. The small amount of lemongrass in cooking or a cup of tea is very unlikely to be a problem. Before using concentrated lemongrass supplements or the essential oil, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.
