Pantoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Lemongrass interacts with.

Theoretically, lemongrass might decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist with pantoprazole and lemongrass. Your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear pantoprazole. Lab and animal studies hint that lemongrass (and its lemony compound citral) may slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more pantoprazole linger in your system, slightly nudging up its effect or side effects like headache, mild stomach upset, or diarrhea. Pantoprazole isn't a prodrug, so this would mean a touch more drug, not less.

The good news: this is theoretical and based on lab work, not human studies. The cup of lemongrass tea or the herb in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated capsules or the essential oil are worth a quick chat with your pharmacist.

About Pantoprazole

What Is Pantoprazole Used For?

Brand names: Protonix, Pantoloc, Protonix IV

Pantoprazole delayed-release tablets and oral suspension are used in adults and children 5 years and older to heal erosive esophagitis (EE) — damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid — and to relieve GERD symptoms short-term (up to 8 weeks). In adults, they are also used to maintain that healing and reduce heartburn relapse, and to treat conditions where the stomach makes too much acid, including Zollinger-Ellison (ZE) Syndrome.

Intravenous (IV) pantoprazole — given by injection or infusion in a clinical setting — is approved in adults for short-term treatment of GERD with a history of erosive esophagitis (up to 10 days) and for pathological hypersecretory conditions including ZE Syndrome. PROTONIX I.V. is also approved for GERD/EE in pediatric patients 3 months and older (up to 7 days). IV pantoprazole is not approved for treating upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
