Maral Root and Anisindione

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Anisindione

Anisindione falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Maral Root interacts with.

In vitro research shows that maral root tincture can reduce platelet aggregation. Theoretically, maral root might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Anisindione (Miradon) is an older blood thinner that works a lot like warfarin, and it's a drug where small shifts in your blood's clotting can have a real effect. The concern here is additive bleeding. Lab studies suggest Maral Root may make platelets (the cells that help your blood clot) a bit less sticky. Pair that with a medicine already keeping your blood thin, and in theory you could bleed more easily.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical, based on test-tube work, not real patient cases. Still, with a drug like this I'd play it safe. Watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or dark stools, and please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Maral Root.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Anisindione page

“Anisindione (Miradon) thins the blood to prevent dangerous clots, and blood thinners leave little room between not enough effect and too much bleeding, so this list deserves real care. Of the 218 supplements and herbs on file, 202 can push its anticoagulant effect further and raise bleeding risk.”

About Maral Root

What is Maral Root?

  • Physical performance and stamina
  • Muscle building
  • Fatigue and recovery
  • Stress and adaptation
  • General energy and vitality

Maral Root (Rhaponticum carthamoides) is a Siberian herb used as an 'adaptogen' and is popular among athletes for stamina and muscle building, largely because it contains plant compounds called ecdysteroids. Human evidence is very limited, so its benefits remain mostly unproven. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
