Here's the gist for Fostamatinib (Tavalisse). This medicine calms down an overactive immune system so your body stops destroying its own platelets. The concern with maritime pine bark is that, at least in lab and animal studies, it seems to rev up immune activity. In theory, that could work against what Fostamatinib is trying to do and make it less effective, meaning your platelet counts might not hold as well and you could see more bruising or bleeding.

I want to be honest with you, though: this is a theoretical concern only. It has not actually been seen in people, so we don't know if it matters in real life. To be safe, just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding maritime pine bark, especially since keeping your platelets stable is the whole point of your treatment.

What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
