Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Dexamethasone
Dexamethasone falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Maritime Pine interacts with.
In vitro and animal research suggests that maritime pine bark extract has immunostimulant activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this one. In lab dishes and animal studies, maritime pine bark extract (Pycnogenol) seems to give the immune system a little nudge to be more active. Dexamethasone works in the opposite direction. It's a corticosteroid that's often used to calm an overactive immune response and reduce inflammation. So the theory is that the supplement could push against what the steroid is trying to do, possibly making it a touch less effective.
I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This immune-boosting effect has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you're on dexamethasone for something important like a flare, a transplant, or cancer care, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Pycnogenol rather than changing anything on your own.

About Maritime Pine
What is Maritime Pine?
- Circulation and vein health
- Antioxidant support
- Skin health and aging
- High blood pressure
- Joint comfort
Maritime pine bark extract (often sold as Pycnogenol) is a plant-based antioxidant most studied for circulation, vein, and skin health. Some research is promising, but many studies are small or industry-funded, so benefits are not firmly proven. It is generally well tolerated, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
About Dexamethasone
What Is Dexamethasone Used For?
Brand names: Decadron, Hexadrol, Dexone, Ozurdex, Dexycu, Hemady, Dextenza
Dexamethasone is mainly used to calm inflammation and overactive immune responses. Depending on the product, it treats allergic conditions, skin diseases, adrenal and other hormone disorders, and certain bowel diseases.
Some uses belong only to specific products. Hemady tablets are used with other anti-myeloma medicines for adults with multiple myeloma. Dextenza (an eye insert) treats eye inflammation and pain after eye surgery and eye itching from allergic conjunctivitis. Ozurdex (an eye implant) treats macular edema after retinal vein occlusion, non-infectious uveitis of the back of the eye, and diabetic macular edema. Maxidex and dexamethasone sodium phosphate eye drops treat steroid-responsive inflammation of the front of the eye.
