Sodium + Dexamethasone
Dexamethasone brand names: Decadron, Hexadrol, Dexone, Ozurdex, Dexycu, and others.
Sodium has a moderate interaction with Dexamethasone. Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CORTICOSTEROIDS
Why this applies to Dexamethasone
Dexamethasone falls under CORTICOSTEROIDS — the group Sodium interacts with.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: steroids like dexamethasone can make your body hold onto sodium and water, and adding a sodium supplement on top of that could nudge your sodium levels higher. The good news is that dexamethasone is one of the weakest steroids when it comes to sodium retention. Unlike hydrocortisone or fludrocortisone, it has very little of that salt-holding effect, so this concern is mostly theoretical for this particular drug.
In real life, the bigger issues to watch with dexamethasone are fluid buildup, puffiness, and rising blood pressure, especially if you have heart or kidney trouble. Everyday salt in food is unlikely to matter, but a deliberate sodium supplement is worth running by your doctor or pharmacist first, particularly if you're on dexamethasone for a while.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

About Sodium
What is Sodium?
- Replacing fluids and electrolytes
- Preventing dehydration during exercise or illness
- Treating low blood sodium (under medical care)
- Seasoning and food preservation
- Antacid (as sodium bicarbonate)
Sodium is an essential mineral and electrolyte your body needs to balance fluids, support nerves, and help muscles work. Most people in modern diets get more than enough—often too much—from food, so supplements are rarely needed except for specific medical reasons like dehydration or low blood sodium. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before deliberately adding sodium, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems.
About Dexamethasone
What Is Dexamethasone Used For?
Brand names: Decadron, Hexadrol, Dexone, Ozurdex, Dexycu, Hemady, Dextenza
Dexamethasone is mainly used to calm inflammation and overactive immune responses. Depending on the product, it treats allergic conditions, skin diseases, adrenal and other hormone disorders, and certain bowel diseases.
Some uses belong only to specific products. Hemady tablets are used with other anti-myeloma medicines for adults with multiple myeloma. Dextenza (an eye insert) treats eye inflammation and pain after eye surgery and eye itching from allergic conjunctivitis. Ozurdex (an eye implant) treats macular edema after retinal vein occlusion, non-infectious uveitis of the back of the eye, and diabetic macular edema. Maxidex and dexamethasone sodium phosphate eye drops treat steroid-responsive inflammation of the front of the eye.

Dexamethasone Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Dexamethasone as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Sodium — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
