Sodium + Budesonide
Budesonide brand names: Entocort EC, Pulmicort, Uceris, Tarpeyo, Eohilia.
Sodium has a moderate interaction with Budesonide. Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CORTICOSTEROIDS
Why this applies to Budesonide
Budesonide falls under CORTICOSTEROIDS — the group Sodium interacts with.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea: steroids like budesonide can make your body hold onto extra sodium and water. If you add a sodium supplement on top of that, in theory you could end up with more sodium than your body wants, which can show up as swelling in the ankles, a bump in blood pressure, or extra fluid retention. The good news is that budesonide is designed to act mostly inside the gut or kidney with limited spread through the rest of the body, so this salt-holding effect is generally weaker than with older steroids like prednisone or hydrocortisone.
This warning is also more theoretical than proven, and everyday salt from food usually isn't the concern. It's deliberate sodium supplements that matter most. If you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney issues, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding any sodium.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Budesonide page
“Budesonide (Entocort EC, Pulmicort, Uceris) is a steroid designed to act locally in the gut or airways while the liver enzyme CYP3A4 clears most of what reaches the bloodstream. That design is exactly why this page warrants real care.”

About Sodium
What is Sodium?
- Replacing fluids and electrolytes
- Preventing dehydration during exercise or illness
- Treating low blood sodium (under medical care)
- Seasoning and food preservation
- Antacid (as sodium bicarbonate)
Sodium is an essential mineral and electrolyte your body needs to balance fluids, support nerves, and help muscles work. Most people in modern diets get more than enough—often too much—from food, so supplements are rarely needed except for specific medical reasons like dehydration or low blood sodium. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before deliberately adding sodium, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems.
About Budesonide
What Is Budesonide Used For?
Brand names: Entocort EC, Pulmicort, Uceris, Tarpeyo, Eohilia
Budesonide calms inflammation. Which condition it treats depends on the product and how it is delivered.
- Asthma: inhaled budesonide (Pulmicort Flexhaler for ages 6 and older; nebulized suspensions such as Pulmicort Respules for children 12 months to 8 years) is used for long-term control.
- Crohn’s disease: budesonide delayed-release capsules treat mild to moderate active disease of the ileum and/or ascending colon (ages 8 and older). They also help maintain remission for up to 3 months in adults.
- Ulcerative colitis: Uceris extended-release tablets and Uceris/budesonide rectal foam help bring on remission of mild to moderate disease.
- Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE): Eohilia oral suspension is used for 12 weeks in people 11 and older.
- IgA nephropathy (IgAN): Tarpeyo is used in adults at risk of progression, to reduce loss of kidney function.
The inhaled products are not for sudden asthma attacks.

Budesonide Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Budesonide as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Sodium — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
