High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.

Here's the simple version: enalapril (Vasotec, Epaned) works by relaxing your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure down. Sodium pulls the other direction. When you take in a lot of salt, your body holds onto more water, your blood volume goes up, and your pressure tends to rise. That can partly cancel out the work enalapril is doing, so your numbers may not drop as much as you and your doctor are hoping for.

This is well supported by good research, especially for folks with kidney trouble. The good news is you usually don't need to fear normal seasoning at the table. The bigger concern is deliberately taking sodium supplements or eating very salty foods regularly. If you're thinking about extra sodium, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Enalapril

What Is Enalapril Used For?

Brand names: Vasotec, Epaned

Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children older than one month, and to treat symptomatic heart failure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

It is also used for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction — when the heart's pumping ability is reduced but the person doesn't yet have obvious heart failure symptoms — to slow the progression to overt heart failure and reduce hospitalizations. Enalapril maleate oral solution (including Epaned) and enalapril maleate tablets (including Vasotec) share these three approved uses.
