Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Insulin (Bovine)
Insulin (Bovine) falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Maritime Pine interacts with.
One clinical study shows that maritime pine bark extract decreases blood sugar in patients with diabetes being treated with antidiabetes agents. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: your bovine insulin already lowers your blood sugar, and maritime pine bark (Pycnogenol) may nudge it down a little further on its own. Put the two together and your sugar could dip lower than you expect, which is what we call hypoglycemia. That can show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.
I want to be honest about the evidence though. This is mostly theoretical, backed by one lower-quality study, so it's a 'keep an eye on it' situation, not a reason to panic. If you decide to use the supplement, check your blood sugar more often at first and watch for low readings. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before starting it, since your insulin dose may need a small adjustment.
