ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Caffeine (prescription drug)
Caffeine (prescription drug) falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Marshmallow interacts with.
Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: marshmallow root is loaded with mucilage, a slippery fiber that swells into a gel in your stomach. The concern is that this gel could coat your gut and slow down how much of your caffeine tablet gets absorbed. If less gets in, you might notice a weaker effect, meaning less of that alertness or wakefulness boost you're taking it for.
I want to be honest with you, though: this is purely theoretical, based on how the fiber behaves, not on real studies in people. It's rated minor for a reason. An easy fix is to space them out, taking your caffeine first and waiting 30 to 60 minutes before the marshmallow. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

About Marshmallow
What is Marshmallow?
- Cough and sore throat
- Dry mouth and throat irritation
- Digestive upset and heartburn
- Skin irritation
- Soothing inflamed tissue
Marshmallow root is a traditional herb rich in soothing, gel-like fibers called mucilage, which is why it has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and stomach irritation. Evidence for these uses is mostly traditional and preliminary, but it is generally considered gentle and well-tolerated for short-term use. As with any supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.
About Caffeine
What Is Caffeine Used For?
Brand names: Dextrophin, Caffeine
Caffeine citrate injection and oral solution are used for the short-term treatment of apnea of prematurity. This means pauses in breathing in premature infants. The label lists the age range as infants between 28 weeks and a later gestational age, and that range is cut off in the text provided.
Over-the-counter caffeine tablets, such as Diurex and the Stay Awake products, are taken by mouth by adults and older children. Their labels point to fatigue and drowsiness. Diurex directions also mention taking it while symptoms persist.
