Here's the thing about ibandronate (Boniva): your body barely absorbs it to begin with, often only about 1 percent of the dose. That's why the directions are so strict, you take it on an empty stomach with plain water and stay upright before eating. Anything that coats your stomach or gut can knock that tiny absorption down even further.

That's where marshmallow comes in. Its slippery mucilage fiber could, in theory, form a layer that blocks some ibandronate from being soaked up, meaning less drug reaches your bones and weaker protection against fractures. This is only a theoretical concern based on how the fiber works, not proven harm. Still, an easy fix is to keep them well apart. Take marshmallow at least 30 to 60 minutes after your ibandronate, and check timing with your pharmacist.

What Is Ibandronate Used For?

Brand names: Boniva, Boniva IV

Ibandronate sodium tablets (brands: Boniva, Ibandronate sodium) are approved for both the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. They increase bone mineral density (BMD) and reduce the risk of spinal fractures.

Ibandronate Sodium injection (given intravenously) is approved for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It also increases bone mineral density and reduces the incidence of vertebral (spinal) fractures. The injection is not approved for prevention.
