Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: marshmallow root is loaded with a slippery fiber called mucilage. When it mixes with water in your gut, it forms a thick gel that can coat your stomach and intestines. The theory is that this gel might trap or slow the absorption of pills you swallow around the same time, and Idelalisib (Zydelig) is taken by mouth, so it could be affected.

If less Idelalisib gets absorbed, you could in theory get a little less of the cancer-fighting effect. I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven in studies. To play it safe, a good habit is to take marshmallow about 30 to 60 minutes after your Idelalisib. Since this is a serious cancer medicine, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What Is Idelalisib Used For?

Brand name: Zydelig

Zydelig (idelalisib) is approved to treat relapsed chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) — a cancer of the blood and bone marrow — when used together with rituximab. It is specifically for patients who have already received treatment and for whom rituximab alone would be appropriate due to other health conditions.

Zydelig is not approved or recommended as a first-line (initial) treatment for CLL or any other cancer, including small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL) or follicular lymphoma (FL). It is also not approved in combination with bendamustine and rituximab, or with rituximab alone, for FL, SLL, or other slow-growing non-Hodgkin lymphomas.
