ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Leucovorin Calcium
Leucovorin Calcium falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Marshmallow interacts with.
Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: marshmallow root makes a thick, slippery gel in your gut. The worry is that this gel could coat your stomach and slow down how much of an oral medicine your body soaks up. With leucovorin (Wellcovorin) taken by mouth, the concern is that less of it might get absorbed if the two are sitting in your stomach at the same time.
Why that matters: leucovorin is often given to protect healthy cells after methotrexate chemotherapy, so you want a reliable amount in your system. Honestly, this interaction is only theoretical and rated minor, so it's not something to panic over. Still, the easy fix is to space them out, taking marshmallow 30 to 60 minutes after your leucovorin. Please run the timing by your oncology team or pharmacist first.

About Marshmallow
What is Marshmallow?
- Cough and sore throat
- Dry mouth and throat irritation
- Digestive upset and heartburn
- Skin irritation
- Soothing inflamed tissue
Marshmallow root is a traditional herb rich in soothing, gel-like fibers called mucilage, which is why it has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and stomach irritation. Evidence for these uses is mostly traditional and preliminary, but it is generally considered gentle and well-tolerated for short-term use. As with any supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.
About Leucovorin
What Is Leucovorin Used For?
Brand name: Wellcovorin
Leucovorin is used to reduce the harmful effects of methotrexate when the body is having trouble clearing it, and to counteract accidental overdoses of folic acid antagonists or dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) inhibitors — drugs that block the body's ability to use folate. The oral tablet (Leucovorin Calcium) is approved for these uses in adults only. Vykoura injection is also approved to rescue adult and pediatric patients after high-dose methotrexate therapy.
Leucovorin Calcium tablets are approved to treat cerebral folate transport deficiency (FOLR1-CFTD), a rare genetic condition that prevents the brain from getting enough folate, in adults and children. Vykoura injection and leucovorin calcium injection are approved to treat megaloblastic anemia (low red blood cell counts caused by folate deficiency) when oral treatment isn't an option, and to be used alongside fluorouracil (5-FU) to treat metastatic colorectal cancer.
