Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Marshmallow interacts with.

Theoretically, marshmallow flower might have antiplatelet effects.
Animal research suggests that marshmallow flower extract has antiplatelet effects. However, the root and leaf of marshmallow, not the flower, are the plant parts most commonly found in dietary supplements. Theoretically, use of marshmallow flower with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs can have additive effects, and might increase the risk for bleeding in some patients.

Honestly, this is a very weak, mostly theoretical concern, and the pairing with Spinraza (nusinersen) is a bit of an odd fit. The interaction on file flags marshmallow flower as having possible blood-thinning effects, based only on animal lab work. Keep in mind that most marshmallow supplements use the root or leaf, not the flower, so even that small theoretical risk likely doesn't apply to what you'd actually buy.

On top of that, nusinersen isn't a typical blood thinner you swallow. It's given as a spinal (intrathecal) injection to boost a protein for spinal muscular atrophy. The lumbar puncture itself involves a tiny bleeding consideration, so it never hurts to mention any supplement to your care team. Bottom line: this is low-concern, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding marshmallow.

Spinraza (nusinersen) is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness by reducing the body's ability to make a protein called SMN (survival motor neuron). Spinraza is approved for pediatric and adult patients with SMA.

Spinraza is given by intrathecal injection — directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord — so the medicine can reach the central nervous system where it's needed most.
