Here's the gist with marshmallow root and your hepatitis C combo (Technivie). Marshmallow is full of a slippery fiber called mucilage. The thinking is that this gel could coat your stomach and gut just enough to slow or reduce how well a pill that's swallowed gets absorbed. If less of your medicine makes it into your bloodstream, it may not knock back the virus as well, and with hepatitis C treatment you really want full, steady drug levels to clear the infection.

Now, this is only a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not from real cases, so don't panic. A simple fix is timing: take marshmallow about 30 to 60 minutes after your medication. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, though, since this regimen matters a lot.

What Is Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Technivie

  • The combination of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir is usually used in combination with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol), but sometimes it is used alone to treat a certain type of chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus). Ombitasvir is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A inhibitor. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. Paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of HCV in the body. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor. It helps to increase the amount of paritaprevir in the body so that the medication will have a greater effect. It is not known if ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
