ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Formoterol Fumarate, Glycopyrrolate
Formoterol Fumarate, Glycopyrrolate falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Nutmeg interacts with.
Animal research suggests that nutmeg extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Bevespi Aerosphere is an inhaler that combines formoterol (a long-acting bronchodilator) with glycopyrrolate, which is an anticholinergic. Glycopyrrolate works by blocking acetylcholine in your airways so they relax and open up. Here's the theory: animal studies hint that nutmeg may raise acetylcholine levels. Since glycopyrrolate works by lowering acetylcholine's effect, large amounts of nutmeg could, in theory, work against that part of your inhaler and make it a touch less effective at keeping your airways open.
Honestly, this is very speculative and only based on lab and animal work, not people. Normal cooking amounts of nutmeg almost certainly won't matter. Only big, concentrated doses would be a concern, and those are unsafe anyway. If you have questions, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Nutmeg
What is Nutmeg?
- Digestive upset
- Diarrhea
- Sleep and relaxation
- Pain and inflammation
- Flavoring spice
Nutmeg is a popular cooking spice that has long been used in traditional medicine for digestion and other complaints, but there is little solid human research to support its medicinal use. In normal cooking amounts it is generally safe, but larger "medicinal" doses can cause serious poisoning, so it should never be taken in high amounts.
