Nutmeg + Riluzole
Riluzole brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan.
Nutmeg has a moderate interaction with Riluzole. Theoretically, nutmeg might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Riluzole
Riluzole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Nutmeg interacts with.
Animal research suggests that intraperitoneal injections of myristicin, a constituent of nutmeg, can induce CYP1A2.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for riluzole: your liver clears it using an enzyme called CYP1A2. Some early animal research hints that myristicin, a compound in nutmeg, might speed that enzyme up. If that happened in people, your body could clear riluzole a little faster, which in theory might make it work less well at protecting your nerves in ALS. Riluzole is not a prodrug, so faster clearance means less effect, not more.
I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal studies, not real patients, and it involved injected, concentrated doses. A sprinkle of nutmeg on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. If you're thinking about large nutmeg supplements, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Riluzole page
“Riluzole (Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan) slows the progression of ALS, and it already works the liver hard, which is where this list turns genuinely serious. The four major-rated entries among 141 documented interactions cluster around two hazards: extra liver strain (Siberian cocklebur has caused liver failure, and heavy alcohol from be…”

About Nutmeg
What is Nutmeg?
- Digestive upset
- Diarrhea
- Sleep and relaxation
- Pain and inflammation
- Flavoring spice
Nutmeg is a popular cooking spice that has long been used in traditional medicine for digestion and other complaints, but there is little solid human research to support its medicinal use. In normal cooking amounts it is generally safe, but larger "medicinal" doses can cause serious poisoning, so it should never be taken in high amounts.
About Riluzole
What Is Riluzole Used For?
Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan
Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).
Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
