Why this applies to Timolol

Timolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Olive Oil interacts with.

Theoretically, taking olive oil with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects on blood pressure.
Some clinical and observational research suggests that adding olive oil into the diet, especially in place of saturated fat, is associated with reduced blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with timolol and olive oil: timolol is a beta blocker that lowers your blood pressure and slows your heart rate. Olive oil, especially when it replaces less healthy fats in your meals, can gently nudge blood pressure down too. So the two work in the same direction, which means their effects may add up a little.

For most people this is mild and not a reason to skip your healthy cooking oil. But if you notice signs that your pressure dipped too low, like dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, unusual tiredness, or a slow heartbeat, that's worth mentioning. This is more about everyday food amounts being fine versus jumping to concentrated olive oil supplements, which is something to run by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Timolol

What Is Timolol Used For?

Brand names: Blocadren, Timol, Timoptic

Timolol is available in ophthalmic (eye) forms and as an oral tablet, and each form has its own approved uses. Ophthalmic formulations — including Betimol, Istalol, Timolol GFS, Timolol hemihydrate, Timolol Maleate eye drops, and Timolol Maleate Ophthalmic Gel Forming Solution — are used to lower elevated intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) in people with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma.

Timolol Maleate tablets are used orally for three separate conditions: treating high blood pressure (alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines), reducing the risk of death and repeat heart attack in people who have survived a heart attack and are clinically stable, and preventing migraine headaches.
