Why this applies to Atomoxetine

Atomoxetine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Panax Ginseng interacts with.

Theoretically, Panax ginseng might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. However, research is conflicting.
There is some evidence that Panax ginseng can inhibit the CYP2D6 enzyme by approximately 6%. In addition, in animal research, Panax ginseng inhibits the metabolism of dextromethorphan, a drug metabolized by CYP2D6, by a small amount. However, contradictory research suggests Panax ginseng might not inhibit CYP2D6. Until more is known, use Panax ginseng cautiously in patients taking drugs metabolized by these enzymes.

Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear atomoxetine (Strattera) out of your system. Panax ginseng might slow that enzyme down a little, which in theory could let atomoxetine build up slightly. If that happened, you might notice more of its usual side effects, things like a faster heartbeat, higher blood pressure, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, decreased appetite, or feeling jittery.

Here's the reassuring part: the evidence is weak and conflicting. One study found ginseng blocks CYP2D6 by only about 6 percent, and other research suggests it may not block it at all. So for most people this is more of a theoretical caution than a real-world problem. Still, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before adding ginseng, especially if you already notice side effects.

What Is Atomoxetine Used For?

Brand name: Strattera

Atomoxetine — available as capsules (Atomoxetine, Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Strattera) and as an oral solution (Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Atoncy) — is approved for the treatment of ADHD in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older. It is meant to be part of a total treatment program that may also include psychological, educational, and social supports.

ADHD is diagnosed when persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity cause meaningful problems in daily life — at school, at work, or at home — in more than one setting. Atomoxetine is not approved to treat major depressive disorder.
