Papaya and Vildagliptin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Vildagliptin

Vildagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Papaya interacts with.

Concomitant use of antidiabetic drugs with fermented papaya can produce additive effects. It is unclear if other forms of papaya have the same effect.
A small low-quality clinical study in patients with type 2 diabetes who are taking glibenclamide shows that taking a fermented papaya preparation 3 grams daily for 2 months decreases fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels when compared to baseline. Additionally, of the 25 patients in the study, 9 required a reduction in glibenclamide dose.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: papaya, especially the fermented kind taken as a supplement, may gently lower blood sugar on its own. When you stack that effect on top of vildagliptin (Galvus), which is already working to bring your glucose down, the two can add together. In other words, your numbers might drop a little lower than vildagliptin alone would manage.

The good news is the signal here comes from one small, low-quality study using fermented papaya with a different diabetes pill, so we can't say for sure it does the same with vildagliptin. Eating ripe papaya as a normal food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated or fermented papaya supplements are where I'd be cautious. If you do add one, watch for low blood sugar signs like shakiness, sweating, or dizziness, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

About Papaya

What is Papaya?

Papaya
  • Digestive upset and indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Wound and skin care (topical)
  • Intestinal parasites (traditional)
  • Supporting platelet counts in dengue (investigational)

Papaya is a tropical fruit that is nutritious and generally safe to eat as food, and it contains an enzyme called papain used as a digestive aid and meat tenderizer. Papaya leaf extract is being studied for raising platelet counts in dengue fever, but most other supplement uses have limited human evidence. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated papaya supplements, and avoid unripe (green) papaya and papaya seed products in pregnancy.
