ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Repaglinide
Repaglinide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Papaya interacts with.
A small low-quality clinical study in patients with type 2 diabetes who are taking glibenclamide shows that taking a fermented papaya preparation 3 grams daily for 2 months decreases fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels when compared to baseline. Additionally, of the 25 patients in the study, 9 required a reduction in glibenclamide dose.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist if you take repaglinide (Prandin) and are curious about papaya. Repaglinide already works by nudging your pancreas to release more insulin, which lowers blood sugar. There's a small, lower-quality study showing that a fermented papaya preparation (about 3 grams daily) helped lower blood sugar on its own in people with type 2 diabetes. So the concern isn't that papaya blocks or boosts how your body clears repaglinide; it's that the two can add up and push your blood sugar down a little too far.
In real life, that could mean more episodes of low blood sugar: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, hunger, or feeling foggy. This is mostly tied to concentrated fermented papaya supplements, not a normal slice of fresh fruit with breakfast. If you want to try a papaya supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Repaglinide page
“Repaglinide (Prandin, GlucoNorm) is taken right before meals to drop blood sugar quickly, and that speed is exactly why this list deserves real respect. Nearly everything on it also acts on blood sugar, usually pushing it lower still and raising the odds of a hypoglycemic crash, though a handful, niacin among them, pull the other way a…”

About Papaya
What is Papaya?
- Digestive upset and indigestion
- Constipation
- Wound and skin care (topical)
- Intestinal parasites (traditional)
- Supporting platelet counts in dengue (investigational)
Papaya is a tropical fruit that is nutritious and generally safe to eat as food, and it contains an enzyme called papain used as a digestive aid and meat tenderizer. Papaya leaf extract is being studied for raising platelet counts in dengue fever, but most other supplement uses have limited human evidence. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated papaya supplements, and avoid unripe (green) papaya and papaya seed products in pregnancy.
