Why this applies to Abemaciclib

Abemaciclib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Peony interacts with.

Theoretically, use of peony may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that peony suppresses the metabolism of clozapine via weak-to-moderate inhibitory effects on CYP1A2 and CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea with peony and Verzenio (abemaciclib). Your body clears abemaciclib mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, peony seems to mildly slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in a real person, less of the drug would get broken down, so more could build up in your system.

With abemaciclib, higher levels could mean stronger side effects like diarrhea, low blood counts, fatigue, or nausea. I want to be honest though: this is only theoretical, based on lab work, not on people taking these two together. So it's a possible concern, not a proven one. Since abemaciclib is a serious cancer medicine, please don't add peony without first checking with your oncologist or pharmacist.

About Abemaciclib

What Is Abemaciclib Used For?

Brand name: Verzenio

Verzenio (abemaciclib) is used to treat HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer in adults. For early breast cancer at high risk of recurrence, Verzenio is taken alongside endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) after surgery to help prevent the cancer from coming back.

For advanced or metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread), Verzenio can be used in combination with an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment, in combination with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on endocrine therapy, or alone after prior endocrine therapy and chemotherapy have stopped working.
