Why this applies to Quizartinib

Quizartinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Peony interacts with.

Theoretically, use of peony may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that peony suppresses the metabolism of clozapine via weak-to-moderate inhibitory effects on CYP1A2 and CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version for anyone on Vanflyta (quizartinib), which treats a certain type of acute myeloid leukemia. Quizartinib is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Peony root has shown, in lab and animal studies only, a weak-to-moderate ability to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in a real person, quizartinib could build up a bit higher than expected.

Why that matters here: quizartinib carries a warning about affecting your heart rhythm (a longer QT interval), so even small increases in blood level are worth taking seriously. Higher levels could also mean more nausea, tiredness, or low blood counts. To be clear, this has not been shown in humans, so this is a theoretical concern, not a proven one. Still, please check with your oncology team or pharmacist before adding peony.
