Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs) — the group Potassium interacts with.

Using ACEIs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ACEIs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.

Your medication is a combo pill: benazepril (an ACE inhibitor) plus hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill). Here's the tug-of-war on potassium. Benazepril tends to hold onto potassium by lowering a hormone called aldosterone, while the hydrochlorothiazide side tends to push potassium out. Adding a potassium supplement on top of the benazepril part can tip you toward too much potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia), especially if your kidneys aren't working at full speed.

Too much potassium can cause muscle weakness, tingling, a slow or irregular heartbeat, and in serious cases dangerous rhythm problems. Everyday potassium from fruits and vegetables is usually fine and even encouraged. It's the concentrated supplement (or salt substitutes) that's the concern. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any potassium product, and don't stop your blood pressure medicine on your own.
