Why this applies to Rucaparib Camsylate

Rucaparib Camsylate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Propolis interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2D6. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2D6 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2D6 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version on combining propolis with your Rubraca (rucaparib). The concern is that propolis might block a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, which helps clear rucaparib from your body. In theory, if that enzyme is slowed down, rucaparib could build up a bit and lead to stronger side effects, things like nausea, fatigue, low blood counts, or changes in taste.

But I want to be honest about how weak this signal is. This only showed up in test-tube studies, and when researchers gave propolis to animals, they didn't see a real effect. It has never been reported in people, and it would likely take concentrated supplement doses, not the small amounts in foods, to matter at all. Still, since rucaparib is a serious cancer medicine, please run any propolis supplement by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What Is Rucaparib Used For?

Brand name: Rubraca

Rubraca (rucaparib) is used for two types of cancer in adults who carry a harmful BRCA gene mutation (either inherited or found in the tumor). First, it is used as maintenance treatment — meaning ongoing treatment to keep cancer from coming back — in people with recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer who responded (fully or partially) to platinum-based chemotherapy.

Second, Rubraca treats metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (advanced prostate cancer that has stopped responding to hormone-lowering treatment) in adults who have already received androgen receptor-directed therapy. Patients must be tested with an FDA-approved companion diagnostic to confirm the BRCA mutation before starting Rubraca for prostate cancer.
