Daunorubicin, Cytarabine falls under ANTITUMOR ANTIBIOTICS — the group Rose Hip interacts with.

Theoretically, the antioxidant effects of rose hip might reduce the effectiveness of antitumor antibiotics.
Rose hip contains the antioxidant vitamin C. There is concern that antioxidants might reduce the activity of chemotherapy drugs that generate free radicals, such as antitumor antibiotics. In contrast, other researchers theorize that antioxidants might make antitumor antibiotic chemotherapy more effective by reducing oxidative stress that could interfere with apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells. More evidence is needed to determine what effects, if any, antioxidants such as vitamin C have on antitumor antibiotic chemotherapy.

Here's the thinking behind this one. The daunorubicin part of Vyxeos is an anthracycline, and one way it kills leukemia cells is by creating free radicals (unstable molecules that damage and trigger death in cancer cells). Rose hip is loaded with antioxidants like vitamin C, which do the opposite of free radicals, so the worry is that heavy antioxidant use could blunt how well your chemo works. Honestly though, this is theoretical. Some researchers actually think antioxidants might help, and we just don't have solid human studies either way.

Because Vyxeos is treating a serious cancer, I wouldn't gamble on it. Eating rose hip in food amounts is unlikely to matter, but please don't start a concentrated rose hip supplement during treatment without first running it by your oncology team.

  • Daunorubicin and cytarabine lipid complex is used to treat certain types of acute myeloid leukemia (AML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) in adults and children 1 year of age and older. Daunorubicin is in a class of medications called anthracyclines. Cytarabine is in a class of medications called antimetabolites. Daunorubicin and cytarabine lipid complex slows or stops the growth of cancer cells in your body.
